The Olympics will leave a fantastic legacy in Chorley after the town's cricket club secured £50,000 funding under a programme linked to the Games.

Officials at Chorley Cricket Club were advised this week that their application under Sport England’s ‘Places People Play’ legacy programme for money to upgrade its pavilion had succeeded.

And chairman Peter Mockett said the news was just reward for the efforts of those behind the project.

“We are delighted to have secured this investment and thanks should go to the committee members who worked on the bid, in particular David Tootell who headed the project,” he said.

“It means we can upgrade the quality of our premises to match the quality of our cricket coaches. It gives encouragement to our volunteers and supporters and apart from the obvious benefits to our club, will enable wider use by schools and the local council in their efforts to increase junior sporting activity as a legacy of London 2012.”

The finance, which comes from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund, will be used for a substantial rebuilding of the pavilion and changing facilities at the Northern League club and the new structure will carry the London 2012 Inspire Mark to celebrate the link to the Games.

The existing pavilion was constructed in the 1970s by former players Albert Mockett and John Mawdesley and has served the club well.

However, to meet the standards demanded by recent legislation, rebuilding work including separate changing and shower facilities for juniors and females was needed and this can now go ahead.

Paul Bryson of the Lancashire Cricket Board added: "This is just reward for all the hard work the club and its members put in over the years. The club have been very patient in waiting for the right opportunity to come up and this funding will hugely benefit all sections of the club."

The facilities will also be utilised by the recently merged Chorley Harriers and Tri-Running and Triathlon Club which uses the ground in an associated member capacity.

Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle was one of many to express his delight at the news.

“Sports clubs like Chorley CC are a vital part of our community but I know sources of funding are difficult to come by, so I'm delighted Chorley's historic cricket club has been awarded this much needed funding from Sport England,” he said.

Sport England Chair Richard Lewis, who pointed out that more than 1,000 projects had now benefited from the funding, said: “This National Lottery investment will create a lasting sporting legacy for the Chorley area.

“For hundreds of clubs and thousands of people, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were the reason their local sports facilities got better.”
