Waddington & West Bradford Triumph
Waddington & West Bradford Primary upset the applecart as they became the Ribble Valley Primary Schools Kwik Cricket 2012 Champions for the first time since the competition began as they defeated plucky Grindleton Primary School by 36 runs in the final.
The competition, which was held at Ribblesdale Wanderers CC, brings together Ribble Valley Primary Schools in order to find a borough champion to go forward to the ASDA Kwik Cricket Lancashire County Final. This year 14 schools were drawn into groups with the winners progressing through to the semi finals. The semi finals were made up of eventual winners Waddington, Salesbury, Langho St Mary’s and the smallest school in the competition, Grindleton. Amazingly, Grindleton beat Langho by 6 runs whilst Waddington overpowered a talented Salesbury side by 30 runs.
With grey skies gathering, the final started off at a steady pace with underdogs Grindleton repelling the awesome Waddington attack and getting to 214 at the halfway stage. Waddington’s attack seemed to be too much for their opponents into the 5th and 6th overs as Grindleton lost wickets and their score plummeted to 206 but an expensive last two overs meant the score rose to 230. This didn’t seem to be enough against Waddington’s expert batting who reached 230 by the halfway stage. With the pressure off Waddington eased to 266 at the end of their 8 overs and secured their place as the Ribble Valley’s representative at the ASDA Kwik Cricket Lancashire County Final on the 28th June at Northern CC.
Huge thanks must go to Ribblesdale for hosting a superb day’s cricket and to Joe Scuderi, Hyndburn & Ribble Valley Cricket Development Coach, for assisting with the organisation of the competition.
