Green End Primary from Manchester Win Lancashire ASDA Kwik Cricket County Final
Green End Primary from Manchester crowned Lancashire ASDA Kwik Cricket Year 6 Mixed winners.
Green End Primary (239 runs) played St Luke’s CE (235 runs) from Bury in the final, after 25 schools from all around the County competed to become the County Finals at Northern Club (Sefton) on Friday 05 July.
The standard of cricket was particularly high and in a change to last year, only the county winner now goes through to the National Final on 12 July at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Headingley Cricket Ground.
Paul Hamer, Green End Primary Sports Coach, said: “It was an excellent day of cricket played in wonderful conditions and facilities at Northern Club. It was a very close final that could have gone either way and compliments must go to both sets of children who played well throughout the competition. I’d like to thank the Lancashire Cricket Board and its staff and helpers for arranging a high quality competition. We look forward to representing Lancashire at the National Final on 12 July.”
Ghulam Abbas, Year 5 teacher at St Luke’s CE, commented: “We were pleased to attend this year as Bury District Champions and delighted to have reached the final. The children have enjoyed it thoroughly. As a school we try to encourage our pupils to join local cricket clubs and help them progress in the sport. We have recently had 3 of our pupils selected for Bury U11 District side, which is very positive. I’d like to thank Bury Cricket Club for allowing us to use their ground and finally many congratulations to Green End Primary.”
Andrew Hayhurst, LCB's Managing Director, added: "Kwik Cricket is most probably the first introduction of cricket for majority of boys and girls. Every year more schools participate through their local District competition and our goal is to ensure these boys and girls continue to play cricket at their schools and local cricket clubs. Good luck to Green End Primary representing Lancashire in the National Final."
Thanks go to ASDA for sponsoring the event and to Northern Club for hosting it so well. Thanks go to all the boys and girls and their teachers for making the day such a success. Final thanks to all local organisers for running District competitions county-wide and sending their winners through to the County Final.
