Burscough Lordsgate Win Asda Year 4 / 5 Kwik Cricket Competition
Sutton CC from St Helens hosted this year's Asda Year 4 / 5 Kwik Cricket Mixed County Final on Friday 12 July, which saw 150 children enjoy a glorious day of sunshine and cricket.
15 schools from 14 different boroughs from across the county all competed in the mixed tournament which consists of 4 boys and 4 girls that make up the team in a competition that introduces the players to Kwik Cricket at Year 4 and 5 in a competitive environment.
The schools were split into 5 groups of 3 for their group games with the 5 winners from each group and the best 3 runners up going through to quarter finals.
It was apparent from the early stages that the 25 yard boundary was not big enough with the orange ball flying around to all parts of the ground!
Burscough Lordsgate Primary School (West Lancs) in Group 1 won their group with 2 wins from 2 and were joined in the quarter finals by Pendleton Primary (Pendle), Helmshore Primary (Rosendale), St Michael's (Bolton) and Walverden Primary (Burnley) all winning their respective groups with the 3 best runners up being St Bede's (South Ribble), St Christopher's (Liverpool) and Wensley Fold Primary (Blackburn with Darwen).
In the quarter finals Burscough Lordsgate (285) overcame Wensleydale Fold (227) and also a win for Pendleton (293) over St Michael's (275). The thrilling game was between Walverden Primary (267) and St Bede's who needed 9 from the last 2 balls. A 4 from the penultimate ball left 6 for victory which they achieved to rapturous applause. In another tight game Helmshore (258) overcame St Christopher's (243).
Semi Final stages saw Burscough take on Pendleton in another thrilling game which saw Burscough reach the final by just 6 runs. In the other semi St Bede's (298) were worthy winners against the very sporting team of Helmshore, St Bede's winning by 34 runs and securing their place in this year's County Final against the unbeaten Burscough Lordsgate.
What had gone to pass previously was surpassed in one of the best finals ever seen in this format of the competition. Batting first St Bede's amassed the biggest Kwik Cricket score of the whole competition this year by scoring a whopping 322. Surely this was enough to clinch the coveted title of county champions? Burscough Lordsgate had different plans as they hit the ball to all parts of the ground to win in the very last over amassing 327 and with it giving them the title of Asda Year 4 / 5 Kwik Cricket Mixed Lancashire County Champions 2013.
The Lancashire Cricket Board would like to thank Sutton CC for their hospitality as hosts and to all the local organisers and the schools involved.
