Bolton Cricket Development Group have held for the first time in their history an U11 Indoor League over the last 5 weeks consisting of 5 teams from the borough of Bolton and a visitor from Bury Cricket Development Group.

The teams involved were Blackrod CC (Bolton Association), Bradshaw CC, Egerton CC, Farnworth CC, Heaton CC and Greenmount CC (Bolton League) all with some excellent junior players on display.

The Bolton Cricket Development Group U11 Indoor League in association with St Catherine’s Academy came to a thrilling conclusion on Sunday 10th February as Blackrod Cricket Club from the Bolton Association went through the 5 game season unbeaten to take the title from Heaton Cricket Club. However, things didn’t seem so straight forward as with the final Blackrod pair at the crease and 3 overs to bat, their title dreams hung in the balance, as they trailed opponents Bradshaw Cricket Club by 3 runs. With teams losing 5 runs for every wicket lost, the Vicarage Road club needed to overhaul the Bradshaw score without losing wickets and thanks to Nathan Mayor’s attacking display, they were victorious. Heaton CC had ensured that the final fixture wouldn’t be a dead rubber by overhauling a good Farnworth Cricket Club side that themselves could have finished second due to runs scored if they had been victorious in this head to head fixture. The day’s opening fixture Egerton CC produced their first victory of the competition by overcoming Greenmount CC. This meant that all 6 teams involved in the competition all went home with points on the board.

The games were all played with an excellent spirit and to a standard that shows that junior cricket in the borough of Bolton shows no signs of letting up in producing future players for the Lancashire junior age group squads and possibly beyond, with Max Perry of Farnworth already being selected for the Lancashire U11s Training Squad for 2013. Particularly impressive was the standard of fielding on show from all sides. Huge thanks go to Phil Deakin (St Catherine’s Academy) for the use of an excellent facility. A big thanks must also go to Karren Knott and her developing umpires from Bolton College, as this has been an ideal setting for the new and upcoming umpires to put in practice their recently acquired qualifications. Last but not least thanks to the players, parents and volunteers from all 6 teams involved.

Bolton LCB Cricket Development Coach, Chris Highton, commented: “The Indoor competition has been played in fantastic spirit by all teams / players and parents and has been a huge success even at the early hour on a Sunday morning! We are hoping this competition will prove a catalyst for further Indoor Competitions in Bolton and hope to expand the league in 2014.”
