A sun drenched August bank holiday Monday saw the final of the LCB U14s Inter League competition reach it's climax as the Lancashire County League took on the Palace Shield League.

St Annes CC kindly hosted the day and provided a fantastic environment for the game.

Lancashire County League won the toss and asked the Palace Shield to bat first. The loss of Bretherton in the 2nd over looked as though the LCL had made the right choice, however what they didn't envisage was a 200 run partnership from Lancs County duo Taylor Cornel (68) and Sam Oldham. Cornall fell to a fantastic catch at Long Off whilst unselfishly trying to push the score on for the Palace Shield. Cameron Smith then joined Oldham to play a 32 run cameo, whilst at the other end Sam Oldham finished with 144 not out in helping the Palace Shield post a very impressive 276 for 2. Pick of the bowlers fpr LCL were Mohammed Ahmed 10-2-30-0 and Brad Johnson 10-3-35-2.

In reply LCL proved what a great wicket for batting on it was as they too got off to a great start of 144 runs for the first wicket through the opening pair of captain Matt Sonczak and Kieran Lawton (45).

Captain and Derbyshire age group player, Sonczak, then took the attack to the Palace Shield and blasted his way to a superb 152 not out and taking his team past the total to lift the Title and be crowned the U14s Inter League Lancashire Winners. Matt was also named as the Man of the Match.

Our congratulations to all the team representatives present on the day, who all played their part in an amazing and very fitting final.

The LCB wish to thank all the inter league sides that have participated in all the rounds and especially to both the Palace Sheild and the Lancashire County League for their involvement.

Thanks to St Annes CC and all their fantastic staff who managed to take the fixture on at such short notice and providing a superb environment for these players to perform.

I had the pleasure to be one of the umpires in the match and would like to agree with Shaun Anders comments after the match that this was one of the best games I have ever umpired. All the lads were a credit, with no copying some of the Test players antics. Thanks guys for a great day.
