Clitheroe CC Cobras U15s Win Lancashire Round
Clitheroe Cricket Club's Cobras Under 15s have won the Lancashire Round of the ECB National Club Championship at a Finals Day at Elton CC in Bury.
The day consisted of 2 semi-finals and a final starting with Clitheroe CC taking on Sefton Park CC and Ormskirk CC taking on Brooklands CC.
A 10:00am start saw the Clitheroe CC win the toss and insert Sefton Park CC on a damp wicket. On a pacey bouncy track and some great bowling from Clitheroe saw the Merseyside Club only managing a toal of 78 for 9 off their allotted 20 overs. Clitheroe knocked off the score in quick time passing the total inside 8 overs with openers Callum Birtwell-Jones and Harry Lang scoring 25 and 30 respectively.
The second semi-final saw Ormskirk CC and Brooklands CC battle it out with Ormskirk batting first. The wicket still showing pace and bounce saw a closer affair, but Brooklands CC came out as winners beating Ormskirk CC by 6 wickets.
The final was an absolute thriller! Clitheroe won the toss and put Brooklands into bat. After 11 overs this seemed to have been a poor decision as Brooklands were destroying the Clitheroe attack. Despite losing two wickets they were 81 off 11 overs. The tight fielding shown in the first game had slipped and mistakes were aplenty. Callum Birtwell–Jones came on to bowl and he performed a remarkable piece of fielding making a diving stop off his own bowling, releasing it to keeper Stones who ran out Brooklands star man. This one piece of brilliance kick started a recovery, and they built on this to restrict Brooklands to 130 for 6.
The reply got off to the worse possible start with Birtwell-Jones being run out for 1. Lang was joined by Under 13 Sam Mulligan who displayed great maturity taking the attack to the opposition. He scored a run a ball, totalling 38 before he was bowled. Captain Dom Stuart came to the crease and with Lang anchoring the innings, Stuart was free to play his natural hard hitting game. However after a couple of enormous 6s he was out for a quick-fire 27. With 28 needed off the last 4 overs Tom Stones kept up the momentum and he and Lang saw the innings through with Stones hitting a 4 off the first ball of the last over to ensure Clitheroe Under 15s a first ever LCB U15 Cup win. This was a fantastic match with much biting of nails and pacing round the boundary from the spectators.
A big thanks from the LCB goes to Elton CC for hosting the day.
Clitheroe CC go through to the Regional stages of the ECB NCC U15 competition taking on Cheshire Cricket Board's Nantwich CC. We wish them the best of luck in the rest of the competition.
