Lancashire South West v Lancashire North at Heywood CC

Lancashire South West batted first on what looked a dry surface. The top order batters went about their business in a steady fashion, however continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, leaving Lanc’s SW on 96 for 6 at lunch. An excellent partnership of 110 between James Seward (87) and Hamza Khan (56) in the afternoon session allowed the lower order to play some attacking shots and Lanc’s SW finished their 1st innings on what was deemed a competitive 269 for 7.

Lancashire North started their innings in aggressive fashion, but this mirrored the South West innings as wickets tumbled at regular intervals due to some lose shots and some excellent tight slow bowling from the 3 South West spinners. Lancs North were soon reduced to 105 for 6. A late partnership of 44 between Phelan and Howarth meant Lancs North finished day 1 on 149 for 8 still needing a further 121 to avoid the follow on.

As players arrived at the ground for Day 2 the Heywood CC groundsmen were busy mopping up after a night of heavy showers. Play was delayed until 12.48pm. Things didn’t go to plan for Lancs North as the 2 remaining wickets were quickly taken leaving North 7 runs short of the follow on. They were duly asked to bat again. The pick of the Lancs SW bowlers was slow left armer John Dotters who finished with figures of 19.1-6-50-5.

Following on, Lancs North were always under pressure and appeared not to have learnt from their 1st innings and again lost wickets at regular intervals. After another fine display of slow left arm bowling from John Dotters (14-3-46-5), Lancs North finished their 2nd innings on 139 for 9, which meant Lancs SW required only 33 runs for an outright win. The end of the game came when Nick Knight smashed 22 off 23 balls.

Man of the Match was John Dotters from Lancs South West who finished with match bowling figures of 33.1-9-96-10.

Lancashire South West won by 10 wickets.

Points:

Lancashire South West: 28 points (15 outright win 4 batting bonus and 9 bowling bonus points)

Lancashire Central East: 7 points (4 batting, 3 bowling)
