Lancs North & Lancs South West Win Game 2

Report and results from Game 2 of the 2 Day U16 Festival.

Lancashire C W v Lancashire N at Fylde CC

Day 1 - After winning the toss Lancs North invited Central Lancs West to bat and were rewarded with the score at 34-4 after 15 overs. A partnership of 61 by R Everett (31) and J Brown (17) saw them briefly recover but the spin of H Phelan 4-25 reduced them to 114 all out after only 45 overs on a pitch which offered differing bounce and spin for the bowlers.

With the rain clouds gathering above the reply got off on a similar pattern with Lancs North losing an early wicket before a near 2 hour delay after a heavy downpour. After the restart the runs dried up with the hosts struggling on 49-6 after just 19 overs. However some lower order partnerships enabled the batting team to a crucial 50 runs lead finishing on 164 all out with B Howarth (57) and K Grimshaw (31) leading the fightback. T Jones 3-46 and F Shafique 3-26 the pick of the bowlers from 15 overs each.

After a long 3 hours in the field and 4 overs still to play before time Lancs North grabbed a quick wicket before the close of play to end the day the happier of the teams with Central Lancs West on 6-1 still 44 runs behind with 9 wickets remaining and 56 overs to bat after a low scoring days play on a slow outfield.

Day 2 – With the sun shining the outfield had dried out and the pitch played better enabling C Laker (39) and A Kulkarni (101) scoring a magnificent century threatening to take the game away from their opponents and useful contributions from Everett and Brown again enabling them to score 210 all out a lead of 160. This could have been much more but for the excellent bowling of C Holder 6-24 including a hat-trick to peg the batting team back significantly after being 176-4 with 16 overs still to bat.

The reply got off to a cautious start with 52 overs to get the 161 required for victory at around 3 runs per over. Again wickets fell at regular intervals with the game in the balance until J Boyne (44no) saw the team home with 4 overs to spare after a great knock from E Fiddler (54) with G Burrows 3-38 taking the early wickets. A good game was played by both sides with contrasting pitch conditions over both days ensuring a tense finish to the game which could have swayed anyway and was warmly appreciated by the spectators and the Lancs North team after scoring the winning runs.

Lancashire North won by 3 wickets.

Lancashire S W v Lancashire C E  at Blackpool CC

Rain at Blackpool CC meant no play Thursday morning. A 2:00pm start was again greeted with a torrential downpour duly washing out play for the day. With a meaningful 2 innings game now impossible we all returned on Friday to play out a 50 overs game.

Joe Noctor won the toss and elected to bat. Nick Knight (35) and Matty Burns (29) laid the platform for a strong batting performance with a first wicket stand of 72 in 18 overs, both falling after the first drinks break. The SWL top order batters took on the challenges laid down by the CLE bowlers although they would have been disappointed in how they lost their wickets.

A 7th wicket stand of 55 between Wright (28) and Jones, the last wicket to fall having scored an enterprising 56 in 76 balls, saw the innings close on 199 after 50 overs.  The score was augmented with CLE gifting 24 extras that included 14 wides. The pick of the bowlers were Pearson, 1-28 and Bailey 2-30, from their allotted 10 overs.

CLE struggled against the spin attack of LSW with wickets falling regularly after the first pair were separated with only 24 on the board. Dotters 4-19 and Johnson 1-23, both completing 10 overs spells caused the damage with resistance only coming from captain Smith-Butler. He was supported by Aughey (21) in a 40 runs 5th wicket stand and Preston in a 29 run 7th wicket stand.

The game ended in the 41st over when Smith-Butler was caught on the square leg boundary for dogged 49.

SWL go into the final game unbeaten taking 19 points from this game and CLE 4 points.
