Northern CC Lift LCB Knock Out Cup in a Bowl Out
The LCB Knock Out Cup Final took place at Emirates Old Trafford on Sunday 15th September between Bamford Fieldhouse CC and Northern CC.
A repeat of the 2012 LCB Knock Out Cup Final saw Bamford Fieldhouse CC take on Northern CC again in this year's final.
With the predicted weather forecast against us, the superb ground staff, led by LCCC Head Groundsman Matt Merchant, worked tirelessly to get the game started on time and start on time they did. Northern's captain James Cole had no hesitation in asking Paddy McKeown the Bamford Fieldhouse captain to take first use with the wicket.
The very talented youngster Josh Tolly and the experienced Grant Hodnett donned their pads first and it was Tolly who took the initial attack to Bailey and Cole as they spearheaded the bowling attack for Northern. After 5 overs James Cole changed the bowling and took the pace off the ball bringing slow left arm spinner Sephton in to the attack and swapped Steven Cole to the AJ Bell Players and Media end. This was an inspired change as S Cole went on to remove Hodnett, McKeown and Ahmed over the next 6 overs finishing a great spell of bowling with figures of 9 overs 2 maidens 3 wickets for just 14 runs.
The heavens unfortunately opened, as forecast, when Bamford Fieldhouse CC were on 65 for 4 with 25.4 overs gone and an early lunch was taken to try and save some time just in case it subsided. The rain unfortunately continued to fall and at 3:15pm the umpires and both captains decided to abandon the game which meant the contest would be decided by a bowl out in the Indoor Cricket Centre.
Both teams were give time to prepare for the bowl out, each team member would take alternative deliveries to try to score a point for their side by hitting the wickets.
Northern started the proceedings and hit the wicket with their first 3 out of 4 deliveries, which made the score 3-1 after round 4. The next 4 rounds really decided the tie as Northern hit another 3 times while Bamford only hit twice which meant that Northern were crowned LCB Knock Out Cup Champions 2013 by the score of 6-3.
We are very grateful to both sides for being so sporting, commiserations to Bamfored Fieldhouse CC and congratulations to Northern CC.
The LCB would like to thank all the LCCC staff for the part they all played in making the day a memorable experience for the players and spectators. Thanks to both clubs for the manner in which they played the game.
