Age is an awful thing as it obviously dulls the memory.

It was brought to my attention at weekend about an article in "ALLOUTCRICKET" from the England fast bowler Devon Malcolm. Apart from the fact that he was brought up in Jamaica and should never have pulled on the 3 lions is irrelevant as I always found him a most affable bloke (without the ball in his hand that is!).

However, as I also thought, having known him for over 25 years, his memories of past events and how they unfold, would be as inaccurate as many of his bouncers! He stated he liked to try and hit me on the head after I had done the same to him in a one day game in 1990. It was my Somerset debut and we won a close Benson and Hedges Cup tie. It was the same innings that Devon famously came out to the middle without his bat!!!! I then promptly hit him on the swede and the die was cast. However, what he neglects to tell you, is that I had already played against Devon at least 20 times since he had arrived from the West Indies and he had distinctly come out second best. I scored my first 2nd X1 ton against him, closely followed by another and then a first class hundred for Lancashire at Derby (with Michael Holding also in the Derbyshire team).

He does state I shyed away from him after that incident at Taunton as I "did not fancy it!"

Well, the day after I got 90 in a Championship match and Devon went off with a bad back. Later that year I scored 116 at Derby in a first class game, followed by 54 in a Sunday League fixture. Devon does not get picked for one day games so that was against Ian Bishop! I then scored 169, 52 not out and 16 in my next 3 knocks completing a first class tally against Derbyshire of 562 runs at an average of 70.25. Devon never got me out in a first class match! He did, however, get it right that he finally caught up with me and broke my hand. I was out for 5 weeks though not a year!

I always maintained that fast bowlers were not very bright!!!
