Lancs U15s Defeat Cheshire
Lancashire U15s 204 for 4 off 43.5 overs defeated Cheshire 200 for 7 off 50 overs at Urmston CC on Tuesday 17 June.
This was Lancashire's third fixture in the ECB Royal London County Cup Competition.
The two teams met at the excellent Urmston ground and at the toss Cheshire won and decided to bat first.
Lancashire had two or three players missing for this game due to injury and school commitments. However, Lancashire have a strong squad and the new players brought in did not weaken the side.
The Cheshire openers, Newton and Fluck, got off to a flying start and scored a hundred partnership before Ross Bretherton bowled Fluck for an excellent 50. More to come from Fluck next year as he is only 14.
Sam Oldham, Lancashire's captain, made some intelligent bowling changes and this led to the run rate dropping to below four an over and Newton becoming less dangerous with pace off the ball.
Tom Hartley, in his first game for Lancs this season, bowled particularly well with figures of 10 overs 2 maidens 2 for 23.
George Newton finished on 91 not out and Cheshire ended their innings on 200 for 7 off 50 overs.
This was a good score but Lancashire were confident of winning on a ground with a short boundary and a fast outfield.
Like Cheshire, Lancashire got off to a flying start with Billington and Cornall running well between the wickets and Billington playing his trademark drive through extra-cover on numerous occasions.
The same pattern of bowling changes as the first innings led to the scoring rate slowing with ‘pace off the ball’ being the order of the day.
However, after a nervy spell when Lancashire lost both Sam Oldham and Ross Bretherton, James Howard joined Tom Billington and these two played extremely well together steering Lancashire home to a comfortable victory with six overs to spare.
James Howard’s 47 was a strong innings playing shots on both sides of the wicket including two sixes. However, man of the match, Tom Billington underlined his undoubted talent with an excellent 105 not out showing a mature approach to his long innings.
Lancashire 204 for 4 off 43.5 over.
