First Season for Lancashire Over 60s
Lancashire Over 60s had their first season in The Spitfire National Over 60s Championship. Geoff Greenop provides a brief summary of their campaign.
We're up and running! "Running" to be interpreted loosely in this case. Only limited success with results but the main targets were achieved. We completed our fixtures and had a good time still enjoying this great sport. Add to this that we won a couple of games, with some honourable defeats, in the strongest group in the competition and hopefully with additions to the squad, we are looking forward to 2014.
While Lancs. won just one game in the group stages, versus Durham/Northumberland at Blackpool, we accumulated enough batting and bowling points to qualify for the Spitfire Plate competition and reached the semi-final, beating Shropshire away at Oswestry in the quarter-final.
Star performers with the bat were Eddie McLoughlin and Chris Hall both from Worsley CC, the former with three half centuries and Chris with two. From Leigh CC, Chris Melia bowled well throughout and was rewarded with 5 for 42 v Shropshire in the Plate quarter-final.
We knew that the first season was not going to be easy, but we played cricket at some great venues, with wonderful hospitality for which we thank those clubs both home and away and look forward to next season.
