Hartley & Griffiths awarded young players of the season for 2010
Gavin Griffiths, Lancashire’s U17 right arm pace bowler was named the “Cedric Rhoades Player of the Season” for boys and Alex Hartley, Lancashire’s U17 slow left arm bowler was named the Player for the Season for girls.
Both Gavin and Alex received their awards for 2010 at Lancashire Cricket Board (LCB) Development of Excellence Presentation Evening on Monday 13 September. The LCB and Lancashire Schools Cricket Association (LSCA) held their End of Season Awards function for their Representative Youth teams in The Point at the Lancashire County Cricket Club, with 450 players and parents in attendance.
Gavin performed outstandingly well throughout the 2010 season with his best bowling figures of 4-37 v Nottinghamshire. His determination and desire to compete at the highest level was awarded when he played for the Lancashire Colts where he bowled with maturity beyond his years. He has gone on to being inducted on the U17 England Development Programme (EDP), which will help him immensely in the coming seasons. Gavin plays his club cricket at Ormskirk CC from the West Lancashire Borough Council.
Alex has had a tremendous season with both Lancashire and England. Her best performance for the Red Rose County was 4-7 v Durham. She went on to represent ECB in the Girls Super 4s and the England U17 National Squad / Academy. She played a key role in England's win in the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier to win that competition. Alex plays her club cricket at Read CC in the Ribble Valley Borough Council.
The evening is aimed at celebrating and congratulating all involved with the Lancashire junior county age group squads, from players through to coaches and officials through to volunteers / parents.
Trophies were also presented to those players who have achieved significant milestones during the season including centuries, 5-wicket hauls, hat-tricks and outstanding wicket-keeping performances (see the recipients of Trophies below). Lancashire Cricket Board’s Director presented the evening with Geoff Ogden Lancashire’s Cricket Chairman, Cricket Director Mike Watkinson, Head Coach Peter Moores, Captain Glen Chapple and First Team Player Steven Croft.
Andrew Hayhurst (LCB Director) commented: “On behalf of the Lancashire Cricket Board I’d like to congratulate all the players that have represented Lancashire this year. These players are the best players currently playing within their age groups and we hope some of these players will go on to represent Lancashire at a senior level. I also would like to thank all the managers and coaches who help ensure these squads perform to their highest level.”
John Stanworth (LCCC Academy Director) added: “Our system of identifying and progressing talented players is as robust as it has ever been. The quality of youngsters playing at representative level is encouraging; those developing their skills with the Emerging Player Programme is already in evidence; and I am hopeful of producing players from our Academy who can step up into First Team cricket or at International level in the girls’ game. My thanks to the coaches, players, parents and our volunteers for their commitment throughout the year.”
John Heaton (LSCA) further commented: “This evening has been the biggest yet with around 400 players and gusts in attendance in the new venue of The Point. It was great to see the “family” of Lancashire Age Group cricket all gather together under one roof to celebrate the season and enjoy the successes.”
Stephen Titchard (LCB Performance Manager) finally commented: “Lancashire cricket has always had a strong passion and culture. The next generation of cricketers have a major role in promoting these values. The evening represented a chance for all players, parents and officials to celebrate what has been an exciting season. I would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm.”
Throughout the season, every player’s results, whether for their representative team, school or club were recorded in the “Level of Excellence Database”. At the end of each month, Lancashire’s Academy Director John Stanworth would analyse this data and select one player whose performances stood out from the pack.
