Representative Cricket

The number of players who were selected to play representative cricket continues to be a source of great pride.

Three players, Ammar Baig, Mark Hague and Danny Pawson, are members of their respective Lancashire County Squads. Ammar and Danny toured with the county during the season. Ammar played a leading part in securing the National U15 Championship for Lancashire at Oundle, Peterborough. Jonathan McGahan, Jonty Poward, Alistair Maxwell and Lewis Jarvis also took part in final trials for Lancashire.

Mark Hague represented Lancashire East in the Lancashire Festival and Ammar Baig made very significant contributions to the Lancashire U15s side that won this competition at Old Trafford.

A considerable number of players were selected to play representative cricket.

  • Simon Belston, Mark Hague and James McGahan were chosen to represent the Manchester Association at U18 Level.

  • U15 Central Lancashire League Ammar Baig and Kevin Tebay

  • U15 Salford Youth League Zeeshan Anwar

  • U11 Bury and District League Lewis Jarvis, Daniel Reiss, Alex Breckin and Abdullah Khan

Ammar Baig and Jonty Poward played for the Bury U15 Town Team. Jonathan McGahan, Nicholas Spruce, Alistair Maxwell, Joel Reiss, Craig Hickford and Danny Pawson were selected for the U13 town team that reached the semi-final of their competition.

The abilities of the management team continue to be recognised. Matthew Metcalfe is a member of the Management Committee of the Manchester Association and is the U18 team manager. Peter McGahan is the manager of the Bury and District U11 Representative Team and is the competition organiser. Les Horton is a member of the steering committee of the Bury Cricket Development Group.

Other Activities

During the winter, coaching sessions were held at the Indoor Sports Centre at Lancashire County Cricket Club. Outdoor practice nights were held during the Summer. Lancashire Coach Paul Taylor was hired for 12 weeks, and he also ran a Summer School, which proved popular, but was blighted by the weather. A specialist wicket-keeping coach, John Partington, was also brought in to work with the players.

Throughout the season advantage was taken of concessions given by Lancashire County Cricket Club to take groups of juniors to one day matches. This is another vehicle for building club spirit and more active volunteer participation.

For the third successive year a tournament was organised for local primary schools. This year’s Cole’s Trophy winners were Park View Primary School, who went on to represent the Borough at the regional final at Lancashire Cricket Club. The event was supported and sponsored by Bury Sports Development Unit.

Awards for All Grant

Thanks to the efforts of the junior section the club was able to secure an Awards for All Grant of £4000, to improve coaching facilities and aid player development. This has been of great benefit to the club and had been used to purchase the following:

  • Bowling Machine

  • Video Camera

  • Coaching Courses for Volunteers

  • Purchase of Miscellaneous Equipment

Club Mark Accreditation

We have recently received news that the club has achieved the nationally recognised, Sport England promoted, Club Mark. This award recognises that the club is following good practice in terms of child protection, equity and coaching. Bury is one of the first clubs in the region to achieve this prestigious award.

Future Developments

The club is committed to a progressive development programme, which aims to improve the quality of its provision for junior players. Proposed future developments include:

  • Further development of coaching, making full utilisation of the net facility at the club, with emphasis on the development of higher order skills for those junior players who are making the transition to senior cricket.

  • Support Bury Cricket Development Group in its appointment of a cricket coach for the Borough. This would help promote school-club links and the recruitment and development of more children to the sport.

  • A review of the age groups of teams to enhance the cricket development of individual players.
