Westhoughton CC win U11 Pairs
The U11 Pairs Competition took place at Westhoughton CC on Sunday 4th September, with the home club hosting New Brighton CC.
There was an early start (9.45) to allow for a Bolton League game to start at 12.30.
Even though the wicket had been covered, the volume of rain that fell overnight was substantial that both the outfield and wicket were very wet. The Westhoughton groundsman and helpers had worked since 7:00 to get the final on, but it was decided to reduce the final to 16 overs and to only bowl from one end.
Westhoughton batted first and scored 294 for 1 wicket. In this competition teams start at 200 and lose 6 runs for wicket, so the target was 289 for New Brighton. In reply New Brighton lost wickets steadily and then suffered a disaster when Robert Kelly from Westhoughton had a "hat trick". This put real pressure on the last New Brighton pair and further wickets fell in an attempt to reach the target. They finished on 250 (304 for 9).
Well done to both finalists and all other teams involved in this year's competition. Westhoughton CC are congratulated for winning the U11s Pairs Competition for 2011.
