Champeones – Champeones
We have waited 23 years for this
I know there are some who are voicing their feelings about “the Mount” and the amount of space dedicated to them on my Blog, but hard luck here are some more column inches.
Greenmount Cricket Club are the 2011 Champions of the Bolton Cricket League.
At about 6.15 pm yesterday the heavy rain promised by the forecasters finally arrived at Little Lever and washed out the game. At almost the same time the umpires at Westhoughton declared the game involving our only challengers – Farnworth Social Circle – over as well. Two points each left us 22 points ahead with three matches remaining – and Champions.
The day at Little Lever was not without incident and rain interruptions. Plon got 94 and Bowks scratched a few at the end. When Bowks was at the wicket with PJH he witnessed the Little Lever pro strike number one son on his spinning digit with some considerable force taking him out of the game. The digit did not look broken but it certainly looked bruised and extremely painful.
The damage did not appear to restrict the celebrations last night but he is out of today’s match with a wary eye on the big Final at OT next Sunday.
The League Chairman, Mr. Milne, made his way up Brandlesholme Road this morning and handed the trophy over to captain, Mark Stewart. The last Greenmount captain to be handed that trophy 23 years ago was his dad, Terry Stewart.
The picture below shows the last Greenmount team to win the trophy. Recognise any famous faces.
Fast forward 23 years and replace Dad, Terry, with son, Mark. One other face remains ???
I wonder when the next Championship will come along ??
